Downtown Storefront
New York, NY
An existing café storefront is reconceived as a new retail space in East Village’s historic district.
Research is undertaken to identify archival records of the space to inform historic and more recent additions to the façade. Reflecting on the landmark district’s urban fabric, a sunken front porch is revitalized as a welcoming entry and an extension of the streetscape. Hand-made elements add visual layers to the entry zone, embracing the district’s artisanal character where patchwork of masonry components can be found adorning shopfronts in the neighborhood.
